Working in Swaffham
It is about an hour west of us, so Swaffham is planned work rather than a night call-out. We are out that way regularly enough that a same-week visit is normally realistic, and we would rather tell you that plainly than promise an hour and arrive in three.
The town centre is Georgian and Victorian around the market place and the Butter Cross — solid buildings, deep floor voids, and heating systems that have been extended a room at a time. Out from there it is postwar and later estate housing, most of it on mains gas and most of it on its second or third boiler.
The surrounding Breckland villages are a different job again. Once you are off the town supply you are into oil, LPG and private water, and the nearest merchant is far enough away that turning up without the right part costs everybody a day.

Swaffham itself is largely on mains gas; a mile or two out and it is oil. It is worth knowing which you are on before you start pricing a replacement, because the two jobs have almost nothing in common beyond the radiators.

The older town centre properties have deep voids and pipe runs that go a surprising distance before they surface. Tracing a leak properly here saves lifting three floors to find it under the first one.
Systems extended a room at a time
Add a radiator every few years for forty years and you end up with a circuit that cannot balance. Cold rooms at the far end are usually a flow problem rather than a boiler that needs replacing.
