Plumber in the city centre
City centre plumbing is its own trade. Narrow terraces, shared soil stacks, listed frontages and pipework that has been added to by six people over ninety years.

Working in the city centre
We work the whole city centre — Tombland and Elm Hill, the Lanes, the streets running off Prince of Wales Road, and the Golden Triangle terraces around Unthank Road and Newmarket Road. It is the patch we get to fastest, and most weeks we are in NR2 more than anywhere else.
A lot of it is Victorian and Edwardian terrace, much of it converted into flats. That means shared stacks, meters in odd places, and a stopcock that is as likely to be under a neighbour's floor as your own. It also means plenty of conservation area frontages where you cannot simply put a flue where you would like one.

What goes wrong in the city centre
The housing here has its own habits. These are the jobs we get called to most.
Terraced stacks and shared wastes
In a converted terrace the waste from three flats often meets in one stack. A blockage on the ground floor shows up as a slow shower on the second. We trace it properly rather than rodding the nearest gully and hoping.
Old pipework, mixed materials
Lead to the main, imperial copper under the floor, plastic push-fit where somebody did a kitchen in 2004. Joining those three safely is most of the job on a city centre leak.
Conservation area flues
If your frontage is listed or in a conservation area, a boiler swap is as much about where the flue can legally terminate as it is about the boiler. We work that out before quoting, not after.
Back boilers still out there
There are still back boilers behind fireplaces in the older terraces. They need removing properly and the gas capping certificating, not just isolating and boarding over.

What people in the city centre say
I am so happy with the excellent work carried out by Archie on my new shower tray. Will definitely be recommending to family and friends.
