Plumber in Thorpe Hamlet
Thorpe Hamlet climbs the hill east of the station, and that hill turns up in almost every conversation about water pressure we have there.

Working in Thorpe Hamlet
It is fifteen minutes from base and firmly inside the area we cover at any hour. Being close to the station and the hospital, it is one of the parts of the city we get called to at odd times.
The housing is mostly Victorian and Edwardian terrace stepped up the slope — Ketts Hill, the streets off Rosary Road, and the long runs towards Thorpe Road. A great deal of it has been converted into flats or is let, and the conversions were rarely done with the plumbing in mind.
Over the top of the hill it becomes Heartsease, a fifties estate laid out on a completely different logic, all mains gas and mostly on its second or third boiler.

What goes wrong in Thorpe Hamlet
The housing here has its own habits. These are the jobs we get called to most.
Height is the pressure problem
Properties partway up the hill sit high above the main. Poor flow on a top floor is frequently the elevation rather than a blocked shower, and no amount of descaling fixes gravity.
Conversions on original pipework
A terrace turned into two or three flats generally still runs the pipework of one house. That is why a fault on the ground floor shows itself two storeys up.
Stepped terraces and long waste runs
Houses built into a slope end up with wastes that travel further and at flatter falls than they should. Recurring blockages here are usually a fall problem, not a usage one.
Heartsease estate boilers
Over the hill the estate housing all reached the same age together. The faults arrive in waves across a few streets rather than one at a time.

What people say
I am so happy with the excellent work carried out by Archie on my new shower tray. Will definitely be recommending to family and friends.
