What we get called out to

The faults that make up most of the work, and what usually causes them

Boiler locking out repeatedly

Often the photocell, the nozzle or contaminated fuel rather than the boiler itself. Resetting it over and over is not a fix

Smell of oil around the tank

Worth a look sooner rather than later. A weeping fuel line is cheap to fix and expensive to ignore

Sludge or water in the tank

Condensation collects in the bottom of a tank over years and eventually reaches the outlet. Common on older plastic tanks

Running out sooner than it used to

Either a leak or a boiler burning inefficiently. A service usually tells you which within the hour

Never been serviced

Oil boilers need it more than gas, not less. The nozzle and the filter are consumables and they do not last forever

Bunded tank getting on

Plastic tanks craze and split with age, and a single skin tank near a watercourse is a problem before it is a leak

What does an oil boiler service include?

The nozzle is replaced, the filter changed, the electrodes checked and set, the heat exchanger and baffles cleaned, and combustion set with an analyser rather than by eye. The tank, the fuel line and the filter get looked at as part of it

You get a written report at the end — the readings, what was replaced and anything that will need attention before next year. That is the paperwork a warranty claim or a buyer will ask for

Late summer is the time to do it. The boiler has stood idle for months, the fault you have not met yet is still small, and you are not behind everyone whose heating failed in the first cold week

Who does the work?

Servicing and repair is done in-house — the boiler, the tank, the fuel line, the filters, the controls and the system around it. Oil work of that kind carries no registration requirement; competence is the bar

Installing or replacing an oil boiler or an oil tank is notifiable under Building Regulations, so that part is registered by an OFTEC registered engineer under their own registration — the same arrangement as the gas work

Why does oil matter in Norfolk?

Because most of the county is not on the mains gas grid. The coast, the villages between Fakenham and Holt, and a good deal of mid Norfolk run on oil, and plenty of plumbers will not touch it

It also means the nearest engineer is often not very near. Servicing on time is worth more out here than it is in the city, because a February breakdown in a village is a longer wait for everyone
